Real-World Experience with the ROMAD Pack

My background as a Marine Scout Sniper and Marine Raider shaped how I evaluate gear. Even though I’m no longer in the military or carrying 117 radios, my expectations for durability, efficiency, and smart design haven’t changed. The ROMAD pack has proven to be an outstanding solution for my current professional needs.

I’ve used the ROMAD on multiple SWAT operations, where organization and mobility are critical. The pack allows me to carry essential equipment such as my gas mask, night vision, warming layer, water, spare batteries, snacks, and other mission-essential items without overloading my pockets or external pouches. Everything has a place, stays secure, and is quickly accessible when it matters.

One area where the ROMAD really shines is maneuverability. Its compact size makes it easy to move in and out of a patrol vehicle and a BearCat during SWAT operations. This is an area that larger packs often struggle with. It rides close to the body and doesn’t snag or feel cumbersome in confined spaces, which is a major advantage during dynamic movements and vehicle-based operations.

I also put the ROMAD through multiple rucking sessions to stress test the internal frame, and it performed exactly as expected. Packs in this size category typically lack the support needed to carry weight comfortably, but the ROMAD is different. The lightweight internal frame provides the rigidity and load support you would expect from a larger pack, without the added bulk or weight. Striking that balance is difficult, but it’s clear this pack was designed with real-world use in mind, and Eberlestock nailed it.

The pack is also impressively quiet, which matters for noise discipline during movement. When worn with body armor, it rides flush to the body and remains stable without shifting or bouncing. Front access to gear is well thought out, allowing critical items to be accessed quickly without digging or fully removing the pack.

Overall, the ROMAD strikes an ideal balance between durability, comfort, and operational use. While my role has evolved since my time in the military, I still demand gear that performs under stress and in unpredictable environments. The ROMAD delivers on that expectation, and I’ve been very pleased with its performance in both training and downrange

ROMAD is a lightweight, compact, and highly versatile comms assault pack that was tested and refined on deployment. Smaller than legacy radio packs like the FAC Track, ROMAD's streamlined design reduces your profile while providing enough room for sustainment and extra gear. These same design choices make ROMAD equally capable on the trail, at the range, or as a bugout bag.

ROMAD is intentionally sized to fit communications systems like the PRC117 and has internal loop MOLLE webbing for securing additional accessories like radio pouches, Velcro holsters, or mag pouches. Locking zippers along the comms port give in-field security and work as a first line of defense against the elements.

Accessing the internals is quick and straightforward, thanks to a full-length U-shaped opening that runs from top to bottom. This design feature lets you rapidly retrieve gear without having to blindly feel your way around the pack. A separate, dedicated hydration sleeve keeps liquids away from sensitive equipment, clothing, or other gear in the pack's main compartment.

On the pack's exterior, you'll find two zippered organizational pockets. The top pocket is perfect for grab-and-go essentials, and the bottom has padding for NODs or hearing protection.

ROMAD's internal HDPE frame adds structure and support for heavier loads, and ergonomic air-mesh padding provides all-day comfort and ventilation with or without a plate carrier. MOLLE webbing along the entire shoulder harness keeps cables secure and protected, reducing snags and giving you a place to route hydration system hoses.

When working in confined spaces like vehicles, helicopters, and watercraft, ROMAD's slim profile promotes maneuverability. This makes ROMAD a fantastic choice for carry-on travel or transport from field work to the gym. Extensive MOLLE webbing across all external surfaces allows ROMAD to expand with the addition of MOLLE-compatible accessories, allowing you to prioritize sustainment and scale up or down from there depending on the mission.
